District Six Museum Tour

30 August 2024

On Saturday, 30 August 2024, students from the History Society visited the Iziko Slave Lodge and the @districtsixmuseum for a sobering yet profoundly enriching educational experience. These sites offered more than historical information; they provided spaces for critical reflection on South Africa’s complex and often painful past, particularly the legacies of slavery, forced removals, and systemic injustice.

Walking through the exhibitions allowed students to engage directly with personal narratives, archival material, and visual histories that brought the realities of oppression, resistance, and resilience into sharp focus. The visit encouraged thoughtful discussion about memory, identity, and the ongoing impact of historical trauma on contemporary South African society.

Despite the emotional weight of the experience, it was an invaluable opportunity to learn outside of the classroom, deepen historical understanding, and foster a stronger sense of social awareness and responsibility. The excursion reinforced the importance of preserving and engaging with these histories, not only to honour those who suffered, but to better understand the present and shape a more just future.
