About the Stellenbosch Umkhondo History Society
This society is composed of students, both registered history students and those from outside of the department with a passion for understanding the past. Its purpose is to discuss history in a thoughtful, inclusive and critical manner and understand how it shapes our world today.
Umkhondo is an isiXhosa and isiZulu word meaning “trace,” “footprint,” or “path,” reflecting our need to acknowledge all those who came before us and have that guide where we go in the future.
We collaborate with the Stellenbosch University History Department to organise events, both for the society and departmental events such as the third years’ history gala. The society is also in the early stages of readmission as an official Stellenbosch University society, which will enable us to engage further with student life and spread our reach.
